Auditor General says monitoring needs to be better for BC government’s IT spending

BC’s Auditor General has released the results of a report on the government’s information technology systems. Carol Bellringer says in 2014-15, the province spent $668-million developing new IT systems and enhancing existing systems.

Bellringer says the largest and most costly IT projects face the greatest risk of failure and Bellringer’s report has 3 recommendations, all to do with better oversight of projects.

Over the last several years, the province has invested in IT programs for education, social services, BC Hydro, health care and the criminal justice system, all of which have come with some degree of controversy ranging from cost overruns to poor feedback from front-line users.
