Social reforms to be in focus in Thursday’s Throne Speech

Social reforms are expected to be front and centre in the upcoming Throne Speech.

MLAs will be back in the legislature on Thursday, with the speech outlining the government’s agenda.

The Liberal government is expected to announce a $100 increase to monthly social assistance payments, bringing the rate to $710 a month.

The government is also expected to index the disability rate to the rate of inflation and outline the expansion of the government’s Single Family Employment Initiative.

The employment program offers free tuition, childcare and transportation for single parents who want to go back to school and train in an in-demand trade or job.

The speech will be the first confidence test of the Liberals – a test they are expected to fail as the NDP and Greens have agreed to vote against the speech, no matter what it contains.
