North Island communities receive funding to address homelessness

Provincial funding will help communities address homelessness through projects on the North Island.

According to a release from the BC NDP, the Strathcona Regional District and the City of Campbell River will get $382,200 for the Strathcona 2022-23 Unsheltered Homelessness Response.

They say this project has already been established but it saw increased demand because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program aids unhoused individuals by helping increase food access, medical support, and social services.

The NDP says the Mount Waddington Regional District along with Port Hardy will get $111,698 for the Supporting the North Island’s Vulnerable Population project.

Shelter beds will be provided through funding during the winter months in Port Hardy. The NDP say it will also support the Salvation Army to provide increased services including laundry support, health services, and legal aid.

North Island MLA Michelle Babchuk says the funding will be vital to these communities in addressing homelessness needs.

“These investments are so important to support North Island communities in their response to homelessness while prioritizing the needs of vulnerable populations,” said Babchuk. “With these investments, all residents can benefit from community-led projects and services.”

The funds are a part of $15 million being distributed to 44 communities across the province by the government.

The provincial projects will include services like outreach and mental health supports, creating new temporary shelters for people experiencing homelessness, and expanding shelter availability during potential extreme weather events.
