An arctic outflow system is hitting the coast this evening and overnight, bringing extreme cold temperatures to the North Island and snow elsewhere.
North Island communities can expect wind chill to drop temperatures to minus 20 overnight.
Environment Canada says there’s potential for significant snowfall along eastern Vancouver Island, starting this afternoon in the Duncan area before moving north to hold over Nanaimo tonight. The storm may continue north towards the Comox Valley tomorrow, bringing snow that could impact commuters tonight and tomorrow morning.
The cold weather is expected to continue through the weekend, leading to more snow early next week. People in North Island communities should take care to prevent frostbite and hypothermia, and make sure shelter is provided for pets and outdoor animals.
