North Island communities unite to address accessibility issues

North Island communities are working together to make life easier for residents with disabilities.

Port Hardy, Port McNeill, Port Alice, Alert Bay, and the Mount Waddington Regional District are now working together on a regional accessibility plan.

The plan will help identify some of the barriers people with disabilities face when interacting with their local governments. The plan will recommend ways to remove existing barriers, and consider the needs of people with disabilities going forward.

The local governments are now creating an accessibility committee, and it’s looking for local members. Anyone is welcome to apply to the committee, you can sign up through the village of Port Hardy’s website.

The local governments hope to present their communities with a survey about accessibility this spring.
