The Salmon River Hatchery in Sayward is asking for a little more time to finish a project to keep thieves and vandals away.
Last year in November the Sayward Fish and Game Club’s hatchery was robbed. The Strathcona Regional District provided them with $12,000 to install a fence, cameras, and a metal shipping container to prevent future incidents.
The container is on site, but the hatchery, run by volunteers, needs more time to finish the fencing. The funding has a time limit attached, so the hatchery has asked for an extension to the end of March.
It was approved by the regional district board at its meeting last week.
The hatchery releases 100,000 coho and Chinook salmon fry into the Salmon River each year.
