The owners of Telegraph Cove Resort say they will be open for business this season.
Gordie Graham and his wife Marilyn have spent the last 45 years turning the former sawmill and salmon canning village into an international tourist destination. However, a fire on December 31 started at the north end of the boardwalk and destroyed the pub, restaurant, two adventure tourism business offices, and the Whale Interpretive Centre.
But the Grahams say they aren’t deterred, and once the authorities finish investigating the fire, they will proceed with rebuilding, and plan to be open for the tourism season.
Fundraisers have been launched to help with rebuilding the resort and the Whale Interpretive Centre and have so far raised around $120,000.
Kareen Graham, the Grahams’ daughter, is managing the fundraiser to help get the cove open again. She says a lot of the damage will not be covered by insurance, but they are determined to rebuild.
“We are working hard to ensure that Telegraph Cove is restored to the very best of our ability so that visitors can continue to enjoy the magic of this special place,” she says.
