Provincial health critic speaks out against lengthy wait times for specialists

North Island MLA and official opposition health critic Dr. Anna Kindy says wait times for medical specialists are unacceptable.

In a recent statement on her social media, Kindy referred to a new Doctors of BC survey of 900 specialists around the province. More than 90% say there aren’t enough specialists in BC to meet the needs of the population.

She says there are 1.2 million people on waitlists for specialist care, and that far too many of them will experience worsening conditions or even die while waiting. She called the situation “unconscionable.”

The survey shows wait times of four weeks for urgent cases, and up to 10 months for non-urgent cases.

Kindy called for the province to provide transparent and reliable data about wait times, to improve health care access and physician recruitment.
