FNHA honours Indigenous women leaders

The First Nations Health Authority (FNHA) says they’re taking the time to honour the successes of several Indigenous women who have been an inspiration and served as role models in their communities.

According to the FNHA, the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is “accelerate action” and is reflective of the resurgence of female leadership in their organization who have committed to provide their experience and expertise in First Nation’s health across BC.

One of the women highlighted is Monica McAlduff, who has over 30 years of experience in clinical and operational health leadership. She joined the FNHA in 2020.

“Monica’s leadership is centered on humility, advocacy, and a deep respect for First Nations resilience,” they say. “Her approach is about seeing strength in our communities and using that strength to transform the health system.”

Another highlight from the FNHA is Dr. Sheila Blackstock, who is described as a champion for Indigenous health and education after providing 38 years of experience working as a nurse, serving in acute care in rural, remote and Indigenous communities.

Blackstock says International Women’s Day has significant meaning to her, because of her upbringing.

“I come from a family of strong matriarchs,” she says. “My mother, a wise and compassionate leader in community, my sister, a leader in her own right, who taught me the importance of hard work, education, preserving our traditions and the power of standing up for what is right with kindness and resilience.”

The FNHA says they recognize the hard work that has been done to ensure all First Nations women, and girls are supported.
