Update: wind warning active in Port Hardy, North Island

Environment Canada has upgraded a special weather statement for North Vancouver Island to a wind warning.

The national forecaster said an atmospheric river is expected to arrive Thursday evening, Jan. 8, with strong winds developing by Friday morning.

Wind gusts of 100 to 120 km/h are forecast, increasing the risk of power outages.

β€œWhile winds will start to strengthen tonight [Thursday], the strongest winds will be delayed until Friday,” Environment Canada said in a statement. β€œSoutheasterly winds of 80 to 100 km/h with gusts up to 120 over exposed coastal sections will begin Friday afternoon and continue into early Saturday morning.”

The warning is expected to remain in effect until Sunday for North Vancouver Island, Haida Gwaii and parts of B.C.’s north and central coasts.

The wind warning is classified as a yellow alert, the lowest level on Environment Canada’s warning scale.

The system was initially issued as a special weather statement Thursday morning before being upgraded.
