Totem pole installed outside Nootka Sound RCMP detachment

A new totem pole now stands outside the RCMP detachment in Nootka Sound.

Officers gathered May 13 with members of the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation for a waking ceremony marking the installation of the carving titled β€œThe Protector.”

The pole was carved by master carver Sanford Williams from a log sourced near Yuquot.

It features a wolf, a bear and human figures representing communities served by the Nootka Sound RCMP detachment, including Gold River, Tahsis and Tsaxana.

Officials say the pole symbolizes a partnership between the RCMP and the First Nation.

β€œThe raising of this totem pole represents an important moment in the ongoing relationship between the Nootka Sound detachment and the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation,” said Sgt. Greg Young, Nootka Sound detachment commander. β€œWe are grateful for the guidance, partnership and trust that continues to grow through meaningful engagement, shared understanding and respect. We hope The Protector serves as a lasting reminder of our commitment to continuing that work together.”
