North Island wildfire update

Several wildfires are still burning on the North Island as of Saturday, with a couple of new fires discovered just north of Campbell River.

The B.C. Wildfire Service identified two 90 square meter wildfires west of Menzies Bay, that have since gone out.

The cause of both fires was determined to be lightning strikes.

Elsewhere, a wildfire southeast of Schoen Lake Park that was discovered Aug. 18 has grown to 30 hectares.

Firefighting personnel are responding to the area, and the fire is not classified as a threat to critical infrastructure or public safety.

Another fire discovered Aug. 14 near Bonanza Lake, 30 kilometres west of Sayward, has grown to six hectares.

The B.C. Wildfire Service said aviation services are monitoring the fire, which is also not classified as a threat to critical infrastructure or public safety.
