Power restored to North Island

A washed out tree knocked out power to the entire North Island on Monday.

The bank of the river washed out, bringing the tree down across the transmission circuit that brings power to the region, knocking out power to 7,000 customers in the Tri-Port area, Woss, and Alert Bay.

BC Hydro spokesperson Ted Olynyk says it took crews some time to find where the fault was on the line.

He notes when the outage initially happened, they tried to put a helicopter in the air to spot the problem, but rough weather did not allow for that.

Crews were able to have power restored to all areas by 7:00 PM.
