Softwood lumber dispute reignited as U.S. industry files petition

The United States lumber industry has filed a petition requesting the U.S. Government launch litigation against the Canadian and Provincial governments and forest companies.

BC’s Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister, Steve Thomson says forestry is a vital economic driver supporting over 140 rural communities in this province.

American producers have alleged he lumber industry is subsidized by Canadian provincial and federal governments giving it an unfair advantage.

BC Lumber Trade Council president Susan Yurkovich says the marketplace is a little different for lumber producers in Canada than it was when the Softwood Lumber Agreement came in, in 2006.

Yurkovich says about 30% of the lumber produced in B.C. is now shipped to Asia.
