Spot a cougar? Call it in

Conservation officers are reminding people to call in cougar sightings if you see one of the big cats in the area.

There’s been an increase in cougar sightings on the North Island, including one that had to be euthanized after it was seen during daylight hours with a domestic cat in its mouth.

Conservation Officer Jon Paquin says it’s not unusual to see cougar sightings, but it’s important that all sightings are reported.

“Cougars are typically very reclusive in nature…when these incidents do start to occur, monitoring children is key…also monitoring your pets [is important],” he says.

Paquin says once a sighting is reported, CO’s can assess whether any action is required.
