Volunteer Numbers Down for Port Alice Fire Department

The Port Alice Volunteer Fire Department has announced a dwindling number of members.

The department released its monthly report and 3 members are out of the fire-house, with another leaving soon.

That means they will be down to 9 members.

Finance Officer Bonnie Danyk says the preferred number of volunteers is 15, but notes a lot of rural communities usually operate with less.

CAO Paul Carver says the biggest problem is that they lost two pumper operators. He notes that there are two others who know how to use that equipment, but they’re new at it. If you’re interested in volunteering, you can contact the Village of Port Alice or the Fire Department.

Meanwhile, the situation is much different in Port Hardy. The Fire Rescue crew has announced that after many public announcements and after holding an open house, at least 8 new recruits have come on board to train with the department.

In a Facebook post, the department said “We are looking forward to some great training with these new faces over the coming months!”

If you’d like to join the ranks, visit Port Hardy Fire Rescue’s Facebook page for more details.
