Pulp Mill Workers to be Reinstated

Neucel Specialty Cellulose is bringing back a crop of laid-off employees for maintenance on the old Pulp Mill in Port Alice.

A letter from Vice-President of Human Resources Warren Beatty was delivered to Port Alice council this week.

He says the number of employees coming back is “not confirmed” as of this time and the work is being planned, which will dictate how many people are brought back.

The goal is to prepare the mill for the upcoming winter. Beatty says this will provide work for about a four-month period, with the possibility of expanded or extended work in the future.

Beatty says the jobs will have to be focused on on asset preservation, and an upcoming site visit from potential investors Zhongtai Chemical and Georgia Pacific.

In February 2015, the Neucel Specialty Cellulose mill went into a production curtailment following three years of rough pulp prices.

The mill has remained in curtailment ever since.
