Feds Make Changes to EI Benefits

The Federal Government has made some changes to EI benefits.

Parental benefits can now be drawn over a period of up to 18 months, up from 12 months. However, the benefit rate will be lower.

New to the EI program is the Family Caregiver benefit for adults.

That program will provide benefits for up to 15 weeks so a family member can provide care or support to an adult family member who is critically ill, or benefits that will run for 35 weeks if it’s a child who is critically ill.

The program is in addition to the Parents of Critically Ill Children benefit and the Compassionate Care benefit.

The changes come into effect December 3rd.
