NORTH ISLAND, B.C. – The province is injecting $12,500 of funding into arts and history on the North Island.
New Democrat MLA Claire Trevena said the funding comes from the BC Arts Council Grant Program which will support arts and culture organizations across the North Island.
“Art brings people together, and is so important for community building,” Trevena said. “I’m always delighted to see investments in local creativity, and our government’s increased investment in the arts will ensure that even more people will be able to enjoy our community’s arts and culture scene.”
North Island recipients include::
- Campbell River & District Museum & Archives Society $1,500
- Campbell River Community Arts Council $2,000
- Campbell River Writer’s Festival $2,500
- Malcolm Island Arts Society $4,000
- Quadra Island Chamber Music Society $2,500
The BC Arts Council is the provincial government’s lead agency for arts funding and development.
According to a government release, Budget 2019 increased the BC Arts Council funding by an additional $15 million over three years, bringing the annual budget to $34 million.
The new funding is in addition to the $15 million increase over three years in Budget 2018, and a component of the new funding is to make the arts more accessible to everyone, the release notes.
Trevena said the New Democrat government “is committed to enhancing opportunities for British Columbians to succeed in their creative careers, and to increasing equity and access so that all people in British Columbia can participate in the arts and celebrate culture.”
