Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations to test tsunami siren morning of May 9th

PORT HARDY, B.C.-When you hear an air siren in Port Hardy next Thursday morning, don’t panic.

It’s only a test.

Gwa’sala-‘Nakwaxda’xw Nations public works/emergency coordinator Bob Swain said the nations’ will be testing their tsunami siren at 10:00 a.m. on May 9th.

“The siren is to alert people if there’s an event of a tsunami or any kind of a danger like that,” Swain said. “We had this tsunami siren for four years, now.”

One of the manufacturer’s requirements is to have the siren tested at least four times a year.

“I have an emergency preparedness committee and they help me choose the date as to when to sound it,” Swain said.

“When I do that, then I also notify the general public, and also I notify the RCMP, the ambulance, the fire department, the radio stations, just to let them know it’s only a test. No need for panic.”

The siren is located in the First Nations community in Port Hardy.

“We have some residents in Port Hardy who live along the edge of the First Nations reserve, so that is why I put it out there, just to alert them, also,” Swain said.
