Safety first out on the water

Do you plan on heading out on the water any time soon? Well it’s important to have all the necessary safety gear, and a proper emergency plan in case something goes wrong.

Yvonne Laviolette is a boating safety officer with the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 60. She says the waters can be quite frigid, and there’s another important thing to do before you take out your watercraft.

Laviolette has a tip if you find yourself going overboard.

Laviolette says you have 10 minutes to figure out what to do before losing feeling in your hands and the use of your extremities. She adds after an hour, hypothermia will set in and you may lose consciousness.

She advises to always wear an approved flotation device and carry a charged 2-way radio in case you need to call for help.
