Understanding Avalanches on the Island

It’s one thing to read an avalanche report and yet another to fully understand it.
That’s according to Jan Neuspiel, the lead forecaster at the Vancouver Island Avalanche Centre Society who says it is a common misconception that avalanches don’t happen on the Island.
Neuspiel says the Society puts out an avalanche bulletin three times a week and he says currently the report for the Island says back country enthusiasts should stick to simple terrain.
Neuspiel says there have not been any fatalities as a result of an avalanche on the Island but there have been injuries and a two day investment in an avalanche course is time well spent.
