School District 85 discovers lead in water pipes – deactivates water fountains

Some students in the region will have to wait to drink form their school water fountains.

School District 85 spokesperson John Martin says lead was found in the water pipe system..

The levels exceed standards set by the Canadian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines.

The following schools have been affected:

A.J. Elliott Elementary School, Eagle View Elementary School, Fort Rupert Elementary School, North Island Secondary School, and Port Hardy Secondary School.

District personnel are working with Island Health to find a solution and Martin says they should be able to conduct a new test in May.
