North Island looking to become a Whale Heritage Site

The North Island could become an international accredited Whale Heritage Site.

Spokesperson Jared Towers says North Vancouver Island has a rich First Nation culture surrounding killer whales, as well it was the first region in Canada to have whale watching in the 1970s.

He adds the North Island also has the world’s first ecological reserves for whales, so to get this accreditation would be great for the region.

Towers says this is a way to recognize certain areas around the world where people connect with whales, and have an environmental sustainability focus around whales.
