Being prepared for an emergency

Emergency preparedness staff are urging people to review their emergency plan.

Shaun Koopman with the Strathcona Emergency Program says the recent rain events in the region and the earthquake that hit New Zealand on the weekend are reminders of how important it is to be prepared.

He says there are simple things people can do to ensure they are ready.

Koopman notes that people need to be prepared to be self-sufficient for at least a week, as emergency crews will likely be overwhelmed with calls should a major disaster strike.

Koopman says emergency kits should contain items like food and water for a week, medications, a first aid kit and other emergency supplies.

He adds it’s also a good idea to have a tent on hand, in case your house is not able to be lived in following a major earthquake.
