Work still needs to be done for Metis to be recognized across the country

The province of BC has reaffirmed its commitment to Metis as part of the recognition of Louis Riel Day.

Russell Brewer with the Powell River Metis Association says the commitment to the provincial Metis Nation Relationship Accord is important. He notes that there’s been a long history of Metis in Canada not being recognized.

The accord sets out objectives to address health, housing, education, and economic opportunities. Brewer says it’s important to remember Louis Riel for his work not just for the Metis, but for all Canadians.
