Hayward Hoping for Memorial Site for Her Nephew

The aunt of a man who was shot and killed in Port Hardy is hoping for a permanent memorial in town for her nephew.

James Reginald Hayward was slain by an RCMP officer in 2015 at Highway 19 and Granville Street.

Nora Hayward sent in a letter to Port Hardy Council last month requesting that a permanent memorial be installed.

Mayor Hank Book says the Town has suggested a memorial bench instead. He says the District would refurbish a bench at their expense, and the family could purchase a memorial plaque to be installed on the bench.

The family has yet to make a decision on the town’s proposal.
