The Wesley Ridge wildfire on the north side of Cameron Lake now covers more that five-hundred hectares in size and has been classified as a Wildfire of Note.

The Wesley Ridge wildfire continues to grow and has reached nearly five-hundred hectares. The BC Wildfire Service estimates 494 hectares of forest has been burned since the fire was first noticed on July 31.

The Regional District of Nanaimo has declared a local state of emergency and issued an evacuation order because of a wildfire burning on the north shore on Cameron Lake. The evacuation order is for the north side of Cameron Lake, including Wesley Ridge, Chalet Road and Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park at Cameron Lake. There is also an evacuation alert for other nearby locations.

Heat warnings are in place for multiple parts of British Columbia, with temperatures expected to reach up to 37 degrees Celsius in some regions.

Since April the BC Wildfire Service says it has seen close to 750,000 hectares of land burned due to wildfires in the province, but it’s nowhere near the 2023 record.

British Columbia’s water, land and resource stewardship minister is encouraging residents to conserve water, saying drought is worsening in parts of the province. 

A wildfire burning near Lytton grew to over 1.5 square kilometres Thursday and has been declared a wildfire of note by the B.C. Wildfire Service.

Rick Medley said he didn’t know much about lung health when he was diagnosed in 2021 with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis — a chronic lung disease that causes scarring of lung tissue and makes it difficult to breathe.
