Most of the 17 active fires on Vancouver Island are less than one hectare in size and are now classified as held or under control.

The fire is burning in the Upana River area and is estimated at less than one hectare.

Provincial officials are warning that ongoing drought and above-normal temperatures could make for a difficult wildfire season across British Columbia this summer.

British Columbia’s auditor general said the province’s lack of coordination and oversight slowed the recovery of Lytton after a wildfire destroyed most of the village in 2021.

The B.C. Wildfire Service said A.I. generated photos circulating online that seemingly show recent wildfires are not accurate.

The Wesley Ridge wildfire continues to grow and has reached nearly five-hundred hectares. The BC Wildfire Service estimates 494 hectares of forest has been burned since the fire was first noticed on July 31.

The Regional District of Nanaimo has declared a local state of emergency and issued an evacuation order because of a wildfire burning on the north shore on Cameron Lake. The evacuation order is for the north side of Cameron Lake, including Wesley Ridge, Chalet Road and Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park at Cameron Lake. There is also an evacuation alert for other nearby locations.

Premier David Eby says his government is in contact with officials in northeastern British Columbia, where an out-of-control wildfire has prompted evacuations.
