Wolf spotted near Port Hardy walking trail

The District of Port Hardy is warning people that a wolf was recently spotted on a popular walking trail.

The district says it was spotted on Wednesday on the Duval Service Road, near the red gate, and encourages people out walking their pets to be safe.

WildsafeBC in Port Hardy said earlier this month that wolves are in the Port Hardy area, and that the safest wildlife encounter is one you can avoid. To avoid an encounter, be aware of your surroundings, look for animal sign like scat and tracks, travel in groups, and make noise while on the trail.

If you do encounter a wolf, don’t run. Make yourself look big, speak in a firm voice, and back away slowly, don’t turn your back.
