UPDATE: Power line repairs ahead of schedule, but outages persist on North Island

UPDATE: BC Hydro says it will have power restored in Zeballos a day earlier than expected, with repairs expected to be completed by noon on Sunday.

That goes for the rest of nearly 8,000 homes in multiple North Island communities without power, after several days of serious storms.

BC Hydro is responding to transmission circuit failures in Alert Bay, Port McNeill, Port Alice, and Port Hardy. Crews arrived at multiple sites and have been working on fixing the outages all day.

The Village of Zeballos was the hardest-hit by the storms. Yesterday BC Hydro crews completed a helicopter patrol of the distribution line that provides power to the village. The damage is extensive with nine spans of wire that need to be restrung.

The damaged equipment is located in a remote and heavily forested area, crews have to access the region with a barge and helicopter.

BC Hydro expects all communities to have power restored by noon on Sunday.
