One dead in early morning Port McNeill hotel fire

One person is dead following an early morning hotel fire, according to Port McNeill Fire Rescue.

They say crews were dispatched to a structure fire at around 1:30 on Campbell Way at the Haida Way Motor Inn. When they arrived, flames were showing from one side of the building.

Fire crews say the fire was quickly knocked down and a thorough search was done of the hotel was done for extensions. Hyde Creek and Port Hardy firefighters were also contacted through mutual aid.

Port McNeill Fire Rescue add that unfortunately there was one fatality in the fire.

They would like to thank both fire departments, BC Emergency Health Service and Port McNeill RCMP for all their help and hard work on the scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
