Heiltsuk Welcomes New Herring Management Plan

The Heiltsuk Nation is welcoming changes to the management plan for Pacific Herring.

The Tribal council and DFO have agreed to changes to the management plan after the community raised concerns about the health of the stock.

Chief Councillor Marilyn Slatt says she’s pleased the two sides have committed to working together.

The changes to the management plan include a lower harvest rate, improved abundance forecasts, and having a Heiltsuk observer on the DFO boats during the herring fishery.
